ESPN Names Swimmer Phelps Best Athlete of the 21st Century, Ovechkin Ranks 54th
ESPN named American swimmer, 23-time Olympic champion and 26-time world champion Michael Phelps the best athlete of the 21st century. The rating is available on the channel’s website.
In second place is American tennis player Serena Williams, who has four Olympic golds and 23 victories in the Grand Slam tournaments. Third place is taken by the world champion in football as part of the Argentina national team, eight-time winner of the Golden Ball, four-time winner of the Champions League with Barcelona Lionel Messi.
The only Russian representative in the ranking is Washington Capitals forward and captain Alexander Ovechkin. He is in 54th place. The 2018 Stanley Cup winner is second on the list of the best snipers in the history of the National Hockey League (NHL).
More than 70,000 people took part in compiling the list. Voters were required to consider only the results shown by the athlete since 2000.
