Argentina coach comments on confusion before final and expects “football fields” at 2026 World Cup

Coach Lionel Scaloni continues to add to his trove of titles with Argentina. His team beat Colombia 1-0 this Sunday and became champions of the 2024 Copa América. Despite the happy ending, the coach regretted the confusion that marked the pre-match and revealed that this interfered in the Argentine dressing room.

“Before the match, the players spent an hour without knowing where their families were. We were worried. We were not unaware of what was happening. It was in this context that we went out to play the match,” said the commander.

This edition of the Copa América was played on pitches with smaller dimensions than FIFA standards. The vast majority of stadiums were built for American football matches. Therefore, CONMEBOL had to adapt the pitches for the continental tournament.

Scaloni took a swipe at the event’s organizers and said he expects “football fields” at the 2026 World Cup, which will have the North American country as one of the hosts.

“I expect the pitches to be bigger at the World Cup. I understand that the World Cup will be played on football pitches, not baseball pitches. The important thing is that we recovered from all these setbacks and won,” he argued.

The Copa América final was Scaloni’s 75th game in charge of Argentina. The coach has a record of 57 wins, 12 draws, six losses and four titles won: two Copa América champions (2021 and 2024), one Finalissima (2022) and one World Cup (2022).
