ASOIF Threatens Americans With Loss of Tournaments Over Chinese Swimmers Case

The Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF) has threatened the Americans with the loss of international tournaments due to the investigation launched in the country into the doping scandal involving 23 Chinese swimmers. This was reported on the organization’s website.

ASOIF said the US position threatened to undermine the independence of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and trust in the autonomy of sporting rules. It noted that the US investigation raises questions about the personal safety of athletes.

On April 20, it became known that in January 2021, the banned drug trimetazidine was found in samples from 23 Chinese swimmers. China said traces of the drug were found in the kitchen of the hotel where the athletes stayed during the competition. WADA considered that there was no evidence of doping, so the swimmers were allowed to participate in the Tokyo Olympics.

USADA CEO Travis Tygart accused WADA and the Chinese agency CHINADA of concealing information. Later, the US questioned the independence of the prosecutor appointed to investigate the case.
