Basque: Biniam Girmayk Villeneuve-sur-Lote sprinted to the finish line, and this stage was reserved for the 2024 Tourrean
The Eritrean cyclist of the team Intermarché-Wanty Biniam Girmay has won the twelfth stage of the 2024 Tour de Francein the sprint, in Villeneuve-sur-Lot, and thus added his third victory in this 111th edition of the race. In parallel, in the general classificationthe Slovenian rider of the team UAE Emirates Tadej Pogacar remains in the lead; Primoz Roglic (Red Bull-BORA)who fell twelve kilometres from the finish, lost two minutes and 27 seconds, being overtaken by Joao Almeida (UAE) and Carlos Rodríguez (INEOS), and is now sixth. Pello Bilbao (Bahrain-Victorious) was forced to abandon the Tour due to illness.
In this context, Girmay, who also leads the points classification, has confirmed that he is, at least so far, the best sprinter of this Tour. He won the stage with authority, demonstrating, once again, his strength in mass arrivals, in addition to the excellent form he is going through.
As has been said, falls have also marked the day. The most notable is the one suffered by Primoz Roglicwho has lost two places in the general classification as a result. The Slovenian is sixth after Thursday’s stage; that is the position he occupied a year ago, in the 2023 Tour, Hair Bilbao; The Biscayan cyclist, however, was unable to repeat this excellent performance this year, as he had to get off his bike during the twelfth stage.
On Friday, the 12th, the game will be played the thirteenth stage of the 111th Tour de France. It is a 165.3-kilometre stage, starting in Agen and finishing in Pau, in which a new sprint finish could be recorded, given that the stage layout only has two climbs that count for points, both of which are 4th category.
