Colombia beat Uruguay 1-0 on Wednesday (10) and qualified for the final of the Copa America-2024in the United States, where on Sunday it will seek the second continental title in its history against Argentina.
Midfielder Jefferson Lerma, on his return to coach Néstor Lorenzo’s starting lineup after serving a suspension, scored the goal in the 38th minute that decided this semi-final at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, with more than 70,000 fans, the majority of whom were Colombians.
Uruguay played with numerical superiority for half of the game, after the expulsion of Colombian defender Daniel Muñoz (45’+1).
“We talked a lot at half-time about multiplying efforts. Sometimes ten can do the work of twelve, not eleven, but twelve, and the guys nailed it,” said Lorenzo.
“In the second half, with an extra player, the game became unnatural, because it was a game with countless interruptions”, countered the ‘Celeste’ coach, Marcelo Bielsa, unhappy with the scenario of the duel in the second half.
Colombia, unbeaten in 28 games and having won its only Copa América at home in 2001, had to face a bombardment from the ‘Celeste’ at the end of the match, but managed to resist and will now seek the title on Sunday in Miami against the world champions, Lionel Messi’s Argentina, who beat Canada 2-0 on Tuesday.
