After the failure in 2024 Copa Americain which the hosts USA were eliminated in the group stage, the country’s federation (US Soccer) announced, this Wednesday, the dismissal of Gregg Berhalter from his position as coach.
“I want to thank Gregg for his hard work and dedication to U.S. Soccer and our men’s national team,” U.S. Soccer President Cindy Parlow Cone said in a statement. “We now focus with our sporting director, Matt Crocker, on finding the right person to lead the U.S. National Team into a new era.”
The United States were in Group C of the Copa América, where they beat Bolivia 2-0 in their opening match, but then lost 2-1 to Panama and 1-0 to Uruguay, in the match that led to their unexpected elimination from the continental tournament in the first phase.

Berhalter, 50, won the Concacaf Nations League twice as coach of the United States, 2019-20 and 2023-2024, and the Concacaf Gold Cup in 2021.
“We are extremely grateful to Gregg for his dedication over the past five years leading the men’s national team,” Crocker said. “Gregg has earned the respect of everyone in our organization and has been instrumental in developing a young team. We wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors.”
Berhalter took over as coach of the US national team after they failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. He led them to 74 games and earned a spot at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where they reached the round of 16.
The United States will host the 2026 World Cup alongside Mexico, also eliminated in the Copa America group stage, and Canada, which lost 2-0 in the semifinals on Tuesday to Argentina and will play for third place in the tournament on Saturday.
