England is in the final of the Eurocup. On Wednesday, the English team came from behind to beat the Netherlands 2-1 at Signal Iduna Park in Dortmund. Xavi Simons opened the scoring for the Dutch, but Kane and Watkins turned the game around for the English.
Now, England will face Spain, who eliminated France, in the grand final. Current runners-up, the team is looking to win the European Championship for the first time in its history. The Netherlands, in turn, says goodbye to the tournament with three wins, one draw and two losses.
The final is scheduled to take place this Sunday, at 4 pm (Brasília time), at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin.
The first half was lively. The Netherlands opened the scoring after just six minutes. England had possession in their own half, but Xavi Simons was clever, stealing the ball from Rice and firing a shot into the top corner of the net, which Pickford managed to touch but was unable to prevent. A great goal for the Dutch.
After conceding the goal, England launched an attack in search of an equaliser, which came in the 20th minute. Full-back Dumfries hit Harry Kane with a heel and, after a VAR review, the referee awarded a penalty in favour of the English. Kane himself went to take the penalty and hit the right corner of the goal, with Verbruggen jumping to the right but unable to prevent the goal.
Soon after, in the 22nd minute, England almost turned the game around. Foden received the ball from Mainoo in the box and shot towards goal. Dumfries cleared the ball on the line and went from villain to hero in a very short space of time.
The Dutch full-back made another appearance in the 29th minute. From a corner kick, Dumfries rose higher than the English defence and headed the ball. The ball hit the crossbar and went out over the goal line. The post was again the focus two minutes later, when Foden hit the post with his left foot.
Still in the first half, at 33 minutes, the Netherlands suffered an important loss. Striker and number ten Memphis Depay fell to the ground and, after receiving medical attention, was substituted. Midfielder Veerman came on in place of the Dutch star.
Unlike the first half, the second half had a slower pace, but with a more incisive Holland. The first chance came only in the 19th minute, when Van Dijk appeared in the area and shot, but Pickford made a good save.
The Netherlands controlled possession for most of the second half, but it was England who scored. In the 35th minute, Walker received the ball on the right and crossed low to Saka, who struck first time and bulged the Dutch net. However, the full-back was offside, and the goal was duly disallowed.
In the 42nd minute, England’s Palmer received the ball in the box and shot over the Dutch goal, wasting a good chance. However, the missed goal was not missed. Three minutes later, Watkins, who had just come on for Kane, took advantage of Palmer’s pass, turned around the marker and shot into the corner, past Verbruggen, who could do nothing.
England held on after turning the game around. The Netherlands even tried a final push, but it was to no avail.
