Cajamarca: Gold Fields allocates US$35 million to extend the life of Cerro Corona

Gold Fields announced that it will invest US$35 million to optimize the useful life of its Cerro Corona gold mine, located in the Cajamarca region.

Luis Rivera, executive vice president of Gold Fields Americas Region, indicated to the Peruvian Institute of Mining Engineers (IIMP) that this investment is intended for improvements to the secondary crushing line, water plants, among other key projects.

Rivera explained that Cerro Corona, a mature operation, has been reducing its gold production. In 2023, production was 240,000 gold equivalent ounces, a figure that will decrease to 200,000 ounces this year.

“Optimizing the life of Cerro Corona does not imply an increase in production, but rather that we will process mineral stored during the last years,” he stressed in an interview with the IIMP.

The executive also indicated that two years ago the feasibility studies to extend the life of the mine until 2030 were completed, which are currently under review by the authority.

“We believe that we will obtain approval because technically the project is very robust. These additional years will allow Cerro Corona to continue contributing to the development of the country and the Cajamarca region to the extent that the operation allows,” said Rivera.

He also said that this extension will allow Gold Fields to continue contributing to the development of the country and the Cajamarca region.

“In the last five years, the company has contributed more than S/475 million in taxes to the Cajamarca region and more than S/320 million in voluntary investments,” he explained.

Cerro Corona: transversal technology in the gold industry

The Executive Vice President of Gold Fields Americas Region also explained how technology is applied across the mine’s operations.

“At the mine operating processes level, we use the Mine Sense fleet management system, as well as in the plant operation, where we use cutting-edge expert systems,” he said.

In addition, a proprietary software called “Ingenio” has been developed, which allows capturing recommendations for improvement and innovation from any Gold Fields worker using an APP on their cell phone, through the camera and adapted and intuitive formats.

“All of this allows us to optimize key areas such as Safety, Environment, Costs, Production and Social. Furthermore, we belong to the Mining Innovation Hub of Peru and work hand in hand with the SNMPE and the IIMP,” he concluded.
