Bordeaux, a historic French football team, has been provisionally relegated to the third division by sports authorities as a result of a lack of guarantees about its financial viability, the French Professional Football League (LFP) announced on Tuesday (9).
“This decision was expected, it is not a surprise,” said a source close to the club, which now has two weeks to finalize its sale to Fenway Sports Group, a fund specialized in sports management and which already owns Liverpool (Premier League), among other teams.
In order to return to the second division, Bordeaux must contribute between 30 and 40 million euros (R$ 177.8 million and R$ 237 million at the current exchange rate) before the start of the next season, scheduled for August 17.
Six-times champion of France, the last of which was in 2009, Bordeaux has had several great players in the country’s football, such as Zinedine Zidane, Alain Giresse, Jean Tigana, Bixente Lizarazu and Christophe Dugarry.
