KHL proposed to FHR to terminate the agreement on rights to the Russian hockey championship
The Continental Hockey League (KHL) has proposed that the Russian Hockey Federation (RHF) terminate the agreement on delegating the rights to host the national championship. This was reported on the RHF website.
The proposal was sent by the KHL to the FHR. The organization’s board will consider it. The current agreement expires in April 2025.
The KHL noted that they plan to become independent from the FHR and the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). At the same time, the clubs will release their best players to participate in the Olympic Games and world championships. “Independence will allow the league to focus primarily on its own goals and objectives, improving the product it creates for athletes and fans,” the statement said.
On July 3, the State Duma passed in the third reading a bill that gives professional sports leagues the right to organize competitions without depending on international federations. Since 2008, the KHL has held the Russian Hockey Championship.
