Turkish President Outraged by Footballer’s Disqualification for Euro 2024

Turkish President Erdogan Outraged by Demiral’s Disqualification from Euro 2024

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed outrage at the disqualification of national team footballer Merih Demiral for a nationalist gesture he made at Euro 2024. His words are quoted by Sabah.

“Does anyone say that the Germans have an eagle on their shirts? Does anyone say that the French have a rooster on their shirts?” Erdogan said, noting that Demiral’s gesture showed his excitement.

Earlier it became known that the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) decided to disqualify Demiral for two Euro matches. He will miss the quarterfinal match against the Netherlands, as well as, if he advances to the next stage, the semifinals of the tournament.

Demiral celebrated his second goal against Austria in the Euro 16 round of 16 with a gesture associated with Turkish ultranationalists. The match ended with a 2-1 victory for Turkey.
