Left-back Alejandro Grimaldo spoke on Thursday about being Spain’s reserve for Marc Cucurella at the Euros after enjoying a great season for Bayer Leverkusen. The defender believes he was one of the best players in his position during 2023/24.
“We are different full-backs, the coach understands that Cucu brings other things that adapt better to the system and what he wants in each game. I accepted, but that doesn’t take away from the merit of a season in which I was one of the best left-backs in the world, if not the best. The numbers say it, as do the performances and the titles. I’m here to help the team when the coach needs me,” he said in an interview with the news agency. EFE.
Last season, Grimaldo played 51 games for Bayer Leverkusen, scoring 12 goals and providing 20 assists. He was a key player in the team’s undefeated title in the German Championship and German Cup, as well as reaching the finals in the Europa League.

However, in this Eurocup the Spaniard has only played two of four possible matches, only one of which he has started. Despite this, the number 12 assured that the situation does not shake his confidence or his relationship with teammate Cucurella.
“I get along really well with Cucu, even though he’s playing more than me at the moment, I still think that I’m here to help and everything I’ve done this season doesn’t lose value because I’m not playing as much. I have a lot of confidence in myself and my football, we have a really good relationship and nothing will change that,” he said.
Grimaldo continues his preparations for the quarterfinals of the European Championship. Spain will face Germany this Friday, at 1 pm (Brasília time), at the Mercedes-Benz Arena. The full-back analyzed the match and praised the players on the opposing team.
“They are a top team, one of the favourites to win the Euros, because they have players who are among the best in the world in their position. We have to be aware of many things. Above all, they have Toni Kroos, who is a player who feels very comfortable on the ball, we will try to take the ball away from him and then players like Wirtz or Musiala can end the game at any moment, they are very dangerous. We have to go out on the pitch and play our game, as we have done so far. Then everything will go well”, he concluded.
