Deputy Zhurova: We pay fees to WADA to return to international sport
Russia continues to pay contributions to the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) because the organization is engaged in important work to control the cleanliness of sport and study new types of doping, State Duma deputy Svetlana Zhurova explained in a conversation with Lenta.ru. In addition, she emphasized that Russia intends to fully return to international sports.
“We continue to participate in international competitions, and WADA ensures doping control,” the politician said. “We have obligations. And if we want to return fully, we need to fulfill them.”
In addition, as Zhurova noted, the refusal to pay contributions to the agency will be perceived as Russia’s intention to abandon the fight against doping, but the country does not plan to go down this path.
“Relationships may be different, but we continue to control our athletes. Yes, we are temporarily not involved in something, each athlete, each federation decides these issues for themselves individually. But at the level of ordinary relations with foreign colleagues, without politics, everything is fine with us. For many sports, the temporary departure of our athletes has become critical,” the deputy added.
It was previously reported that Russia had paid WADA part of its fee for 2023. The agency also expects the remainder to be paid in the near future.
