The Netherlands qualified for the quarter-finals of the Eurocup by beating Romania 3-0 this Tuesday (2), in Munich, in a game in which striker Cody Gakpo was decisive, with a goal and an assist.
After Gakpo (20′) opened the scoring in the first half, coach Ronald Koeman’s ‘Oranje’ sealed the victory with two more goals from Donyell Malen in the final stretch (83′ and 90’+3).
Having failed to shine in the group stage, the Dutch team showed why they are one of the best on the continent against Romania, who are out of the tournament after finishing top of Group E.
“We were fully present from the start of the game, maybe that made the difference. I think we studied the opponent well,” said Koeman, who won the Euro as a player in 1988.
After the defeat, Romania coach Edward Iordanescu preferred to see the glass half full: “We tried to surprise the Dutch and it worked” until the 20th minute.
“There are positive aspects that can inspire us for the future,” he concluded.
