Police launch investigation into Austrians’ racist chants at Euro 2024
Austrian fans chanted racist slogans at a match of the 2024 European Football Championship in Leipzig, Germany, dpa reports.
According to the source, the fans created a scandal by chanting “Germany for the Germans, foreigners out” to the tune of the song L’amour toujours. The police initiated an investigation and opened a case.
Earlier it became known that the defender of the Turkish national team Merih Demiral celebrated a goal against the Austrians in the 1/8 final match of Euro 2024 with a gesture associated with Turkish ultra-nationalists. After this, the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) launched an investigation into the defender, calling Demiral’s behavior inappropriate.
The 2024 European Championship will last until July 14 in ten cities in Germany. The Russian national team is missing the tournament due to the UEFA suspension.
