RBC: RFU discusses option of creating closed league with clubs
Some leading Russian clubs, together with the Russian Football Union (RFU), are considering switching to the American vector of development. This became known to RBC.
According to the source, the Russian football leadership is discussing the option of creating a closed league with the participation of 16 teams, which will be guaranteed participation in the Russian Premier League (RPL) every year. It is noted that in a closed league, clubs would be able to concentrate on a long-term strategy without putting the sporting principle at the forefront – invest more in marketing, commerce, infrastructure, development of academies and young players.
The probability of a closed league appearing next year is estimated as minimal. However, this development vector may work in a few years, when the majority of RPL clubs come to this.
The RPL was founded in 2001. Since its foundation, 16 clubs have participated in it.
