With a great performance by Gakpo, the Netherlands eliminates Romania and qualifies for the quarterfinals of the Euro

The Netherlands triumphed over Romania on Tuesday by a score of 3-0, in the penultimate match of the round of 16 of the European Championship. The goals were scored by Cody Gakpo and Donyell Malen (2).

Despite Malen’s two goals, Gakpo was the Dutch standout performer in the match, with a goal and an assist. The Liverpool forward joined Mikautadze and FabiΓ‘n Ruiz as the players with the most direct involvement in goals (goals and assists) in this edition of the Euro, with four each.

With the victory, the Dutch now await the winner of the match between Austria and Turkey, which will take place later on Tuesday, to find out who their opponents will be in the quarterfinals. The Netherlands’ next match will take place on Saturday at 4pm (BrasΓlia time) at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin.

The game – The first Dutch goal came in the 20th minute, when Gakpo received the ball from Xavi Simons on the left, cut inside and fired a beautiful shot into the corner of the goal to open the scoring.

Despite the great offensive power and dominance of the Netherlands, the second goal only came in the 38th minute of the second half. Gakpo did not give up on an unlikely play and beat defender Dragusin in a physical battle close to the goal line, handing the ball to Malen who simply pushed it in.

There was still time for Malen to become the first player in this Euro to score two goals in the same match. With a beautiful run in the 48th minute of the second half, he cut past the defender and shot to close the score for the Dutch. The assist was also provided by Xavi Simons, who now stands alone as the greatest ‘waiter’ in the Euro, with three assists.
