Early years and Teletubbies career

Jess Smith made her debut as “Sunny” on Teletubbies in March 1997, at just nine months old. Her adorable laugh accompanied every episode, greeting children with the narrator’s words: “Beyond the mountains, beyond the forests, Teletubbies play with us”. The show became a global phenomenon and ended its original run in 2001, after which it was revived in 2014, but with a new twist.

In October of last year, Jess Smith announced her pregnancy, which caused a wave of nostalgia and surprise among fans of the show. The news quickly spread on social media, where Internet users shared their emotions. In early January, Jess Smith shared the news of the birth of her daughter on Instagram. A few days later, she posted a photo of her partner carrying their child. In the caption, she revealed the girl’s name: Poppy Rae Latham. The middle name Poppy is a subtle reference to Jess’s role as “Sunshine” in Teletubbies.

For many years, it was unclear who exactly was filmed for the memorable role. It wasn’t until a few years ago that Jess Smith revealed herself on social media as “Sunshine.” In the same post, she also admitted that many people had previously lied about playing the laughing baby.

I decided it was time for everyone to know. I had always kept it a secret but with the support of my friends at uni I gained the confidence to come out. I am Sunny from Teletubbies

Smith also explained that she was chosen for the role while she was in hospitalwhere the show’s producer was looking for “smiling children.” Her dad helped achieve the desired effect by holding a teddy bear behind the camera and using a toy racing car to draw Jess’s attention to the camera.
