The selection of Switzerland has made it through to the quarter-finals of the European Championship after beating Italy with goals from Remo Freuler and Ruben Vargas at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin.

Despite being the current champion, the pools did not put Italy in the final rounds of the tournament, but his goodbye was with even more noise than could be expected in a team with a tradition. Murat Yakin’s team overcame their prestigious rival as they did three years ago against France also in the round of 16.

Switzerland had clear ideas. They bit, they had possession, they had a lot of movement and participation in offensive play and they only lacked a bit of precision to generate more danger. On the other hand, Italy, who miraculously advanced to the round of 16 in the 98th minute against Croatia, left a lot to be desired from their attitude. Luciano Spalletti’s men were spectators of the match for almost 90 minutes.

The ball didn’t last long for the Italians, nor did they have a dangerous counterattack, appearing somewhat after 15 minutes in their field. With deep sides, Switzerland suffocated the champions, with Xhaka distributing the game until he appeared from behind Freuler to score 1-0 after an assist from Vargas.

Italy went into the locker room with a lot of work to do, but came back just as horrible or worse, with a loss that facilitated the counterattack and the 2-0 of Vargas. A goal with the complicity of an unrecognizable ‘azzurri’, without bloodshed to, at least, rebel against a defeat that seemed inevitable and so it finally was.

Switzerland will face in the quarter-finals of the European Championship England or Slovakia.
