CONMEBOL announced on Friday that it had suspended Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni for one game. In addition, the South American Confederation fined the Argentine Football Association $15,000, or around R$83,000. The punishment was due to the coach’s delay in returning from half-time in the match against Chile last Tuesday.

CONMEBOL claims that, by exceeding the stipulated 15-minute half-time interval, Scaloni and Argentina violated articles 104 and 145 of the 2024 Copa América Regulations. The amount of the fine will be deducted from the amount that Argentina will receive at the end of the competition, including television rights, participation and prizes. The decision cannot be appealed.
With the suspension, Scaloni will not lead Argentina against Peru this Saturday, at 9pm (Brasília time), in Miami, in the final round of Group A of the Copa América. The brothers will be led by Pablo Aimar, along with the usual assistants Walter Samuel and Roberto Ayala.
Argentina is already mathematically qualified for the quarter-finals of the Copa América. To secure first place in the group, the Argentines only need a draw against Peru.
