Van Dijk acknowledges Netherlands’ poor performance and calls for change of stance

Despite the defeat to Austria last Tuesday, in the final round of the Eurocup group stage, the Netherlands managed to qualify for the round of 16. In a press conference this Friday, defender Van Dijk acknowledged that, like his team, he didn’t have a great game.

“I completely understand the criticism. I’m not stupid, but I also know that I can do better and that I should be better, and that’s what I’m working on. I didn’t play my best game against Austria. That affects me, but I also believe that things in general can and should go better. The team as a whole didn’t work, but I look at myself first. I could have contributed a lot more,” he said.

In the round of 16, the Netherlands will face Romania, who qualified in a group with Belgium, Ukraine and Slovakia. Van Dijk warned that the team needs to change its stance if it wants to stay alive in the competition.

“If we continue in the same way, we will have nothing left to do here. That has to change quickly, otherwise we will be sitting at home thinking about what could have been. That is not what we want,” said the Liverpool defender.

The Netherlands and Romania will face each other next Tuesday. Kick-off is at 1 pm (Brasília time) at the Allianz Arena in Germany.
