Swimmer Chikunova called the criteria for admitting Russians to the Olympics unacceptable
World record holder in swimming Evgenia Chikunova was delighted with the decision to refuse to participate in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. Her words are quoted by Match TV.
The athlete stated that she considers the criteria for the admission of Russians unacceptable, and neither the proposed prize money nor the experience of her compatriots could force her to change her mind. “I made a decision based on my spiritual, moral priorities, based on my beliefs regarding that very admission system,” she said.
Last April, Chikunova set a new world record at the Russian Championships in Kazan. She swam the 200-meter backstroke in 2 minutes and 17.55 seconds.
In December 2023, the International Olympic Committee allowed Russians and Belarusians to participate in the Games in Paris. They will be able to take part in the tournament as individual neutral athletes. However, athletes who support the special operation in Ukraine, as well as those who have ties to the Armed Forces or security agencies of Russia and Belarus, will not be allowed to participate in the competition. In addition, representatives of team sports will miss the tournament.
