Germany drew 1-1 with Switzerland this Sunday, in Frankfurt, in the last round of the group stage of the Euro Cup. Fullkrug scored the German goal, and Ndoye scored for the Swiss.
With the draw, Germany, which was already classified in the round of 16, finished the first phase at the top of Group A with seven points. Switzerland finishes the group stage in second place with five points.
Now, both teams await their opponents in the round of 16. Germany faces the second placed team in Group C, which is currently Denmark. Switzerland faces the second placed team in Group B, which could be Italy, Albania or Croatia.
Germany opened the scoring in the 17th minute. Andrich took a risk from outside the area, and goalkeeper Sommer, from Switzerland, was unable to make the save. However, after a VAR review, the referee flagged a foul by Musiala at the start of the play and disallowed the German goal.
With that, Switzerland went forward and, in the 28th minute, opened the scoring in Frankfurt. Ndoye took advantage of the cross and deflected the ball towards Neuer’s goal, who could do nothing. Two minutes later, the scorer took a shot that skimmed the German goal post.
In the 37th minute, German defender Tah fouled Ndoye and received a yellow card. The card took the player out of the round of 16.
Needing the result, Germany started the second half in danger. In the fifth minute, Musiala received a beautiful pass from Wirtz and hit it first time. Sommer made the save, and Gundogan, on the rebound, knocked it out.
In the 24th minute, Germany wasted their best opportunity in the second half. After a beautiful move, Wirtz reached the baseline and crossed low to Kimmich, who hit it, almost in the small area, over the Swiss marker.
Switzerland found the net for the second time in the 38th minute, with Vargas. However, the attacker was ahead, and the goal was duly disallowed. Soon after, the Swiss started to scare again with Xhaka’s shot from outside the area saved by Neuer.
Superior in the second half, Germany tied the game in the final stretch. In the 47th minute, Raum crossed the ball into the area and found Fullkrug, who rose higher than the Swiss defense to test and leave everything the same in Frankfurt.
