In a great performance, Portugal won Turkey 3-0 this Saturday (22), in the second round of Group F of the European Championship, and sealed qualification for the round of 16 of the tournament. A day that brought a lesson,
in coach Roberto Martínez’s view, as Cristiano Ronaldo showed his team spirit by assisting the third Portuguese goal.
“I think we saw something very special today. A great goalscorer who has one on one with the goalkeeper and looks for an assist. It’s a great example,” declared Martínez in the post-match press conference.
With the result, the Portuguese team also secured first place in the group with six points, three ahead of the Turks, while Georgia and the Czech Republic added one point each after having drawn 1-1 hours earlier.
Bernardo Silva (22′), Samet Akaydin (28′ against) and Bruno Fernandes (56′) scored the goals in the Portuguese team’s resounding victory.
“We played well for 20 minutes, we had opportunities and were punished for our first mistake. I think Portugal is one of the best teams in Europe, and today they proved that”, summarized the coach of the Turkish national team, the Italian Vincenzo Montella.
With a team full of good players, Portugal took control of the ball, looking for spaces with circulation and movement to try to attack a technically inferior team, but which had the majority of the fans in Dortmund.
Portugal and Turkey return to the field next Wednesday, in the final round of the group stage. The Portuguese will face Georgia, while the Turks will face the Czech Republic.
