With two from Sterling, leaders Manchester City beat Leicester in a nine-goal match

In a game of nine goals, Manchester City beat Leicester City this Sunday, by 6-3, by the Boxing Day of the Premier League. With the result, the club continues to lead the competition, opening six points over runner-up Liverpool, who have a game in hand.

City knew how to impose their rhythm from the first minutes and exerted strong pressure on the opponent. The goal was not long in coming. With less than five minutes, De Bruyne received a beautiful shot from Fernandinho, fixed it to his left leg and submitted it in the corner to open the scoring.

At 12, defender Laporte was grabbed by Tielemans in the penalty area and the referee awarded the penalty. On the charge, Mahrez kicked hard, high, and extended the score. Five minutes later, Leicester had a good opportunity to reduce with Maddison, who took a free-kick on the edge of the area, however, Ederson stretched and slipped the ball, which hit the crossbar before being knocked off by City’s defense.

With the visiting team still dizzy after the two goals conceded, Pep Guardiola’s team continued to press and, at 20, scored the third after Cancelo’s cross, hit by goalkeeper Schmeichel, stopped at the feet of Gundogan, who only had the job to push to the bottom of the nets.

Three minutes later, Tielemans committed another penalty when he took down Sterling in the area. The Englishman himself took the penalty and scored the fourth goal. Even with the 4-0 on the scoreboard, the home team continued to stifle Leicester’s exit and create new scoring opportunities, forcing Schmeichel to make great saves to avoid an even bigger rout in the first half.

At 10 minutes into the second stage, Maddison pulled a counterattack, got rid of two markers and tabled with Iheanacho to get out in front of the goal and hit Ederson’s exit, decreasing for the visitors. Four minutes later, it was Iheanacho’s turn to pull the counterattack and serve Lookman, who made Leicester’s second. With 20, Maddison submitted from outside the area and Ederson defended, but could not avoid the goal by Iheanacho, who, on the rebound, scored the third and hit the scoreboard.

Brendan Rodgers seemed to have found the key to react in the match. Congesting the entrance to the area and starting transitions along the sides of the field, the coach caused difficulties for City. However, at 24, Laporte headed in and marked the fifth for Manchester, who could breathe after the scare. In the end, Sterling took advantage of RĂºben Dias’ header and completed it to the goal, confirming the victory of the home team.

Londoners Arsenal and Tottenham also won their Boxing Day. Antonio Conte’s team featured goals from Harry Kane, Son and Lucas Moura to defeat Crystal Palace, 3-0, and jump to fifth place in the table. Mikel Arteta’s team beat Norwich, 5-0, with goals from Lacazette, Tierney, Smith Rowe and two from Saka, taking fourth place in the standings.
