To improve the financial conditions of Danish football players, athletes from the men’s national team have renounced an increase in their bonuses, the Nordic country’s football players’ union reported this Friday.
“The men’s team decided not to request a salary increase (…) to improve the conditions of the women’s team,” union spokesman Magnus Hviid told AFP.
“It is an extraordinary measure to help take a small step in the right direction,” added the spokesperson, who admitted, however, that there are still “glass ceilings” that must be broken “to ensure equal opportunities and conditions within the national teams”.
One of the problems is the lack of salary parity between players on the men’s team and athletes on the women’s team.
The agreement, signed at the end of May, provides identical bonuses for men and women, in addition to “improving health insurance coverage for women”, highlighted Hviid.
