Deputy Zhurova criticized chants calling for reprisals against Serbs at the Euro
The chants of football fans in Albania and Croatia at Euro 2024 calling for reprisals against the Serbs and other similar cases occur due to the interference of politics in sports, State Duma deputy Svetlana Zhurova said in a conversation with Lenta.ru. She called for stopping such unsportsmanlike behavior.
“There can be chants, all this happens. But not offensive, not derogatory, not with calls for violence. This is unacceptable,” the politician emphasized. — Political battles, unfortunately, leave the exclusively political field and turn into sports. They always tried to suppress this as much as possible, saying that sport is not a place for politics. There must be some kind of ethics.”
The deputy expressed concern that politics is so heavily involved in competitions and called for such cases to be stopped.
“When you win, when you lose, you have no right to insult your opponent. But politicians are pushing people, and for some reason this is not stopped. If there is no reaction this time, it will be a very bad signal. As with the Ukrainians, who do not shake hands not only with Russians, but even with those who changed their citizenship,” Zhurova added.
Earlier, the Secretary General of the Sebia Football Union, Jovan Surbatovic, appealed to the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) with a demand to punish the national teams of Albania and Croatia for the offensive behavior of their fans during the match of the second round of the Euro 2024 group stage.
