Zhurova considered it necessary to fine Ukrainians for refusing to shake hands with Russians
Olympic champion Svetlana Zhurova spoke in favor of penalties for Ukrainian athletes for refusing to shake hands with Russians at competitions. TASS reports this.
“Ukrainian athletes will finish the game. The handshake rule will have to be abolished – one country is upending ethical norms formed over centuries. Or we have to face fines and disqualifications,” Zhurova said.
Zhurova added that it is not the Ukrainian athletes themselves who are to blame for this. The fact is that for shaking hands with Russians they will be persecuted in their homeland, the Olympic champion noted.
On June 18, Ukrainian fencer Elena Krivitskaya refused to shake hands with Maya Guchmazova, who was born in Russia but competes for Georgia. “Take a gun and fight, defend your homeland. Don’t travel around Switzerland at the expense of state money to attend competitions and don’t fence!” – Guchmazova responded to the incident.
