Police in Hamburg, Germany, said on Sunday they had shot and injured a man who threatened to attack authorities with a pickaxe and a Molotov cocktail in the city where a European Championship match was to be played.
However, “there is no element that indicates any connection with football” and the game between the Netherlands and Poland, with the Dutch winning 2-1, a local police spokesman, Thilo Marxsen, told AFP.
For a reason still unknown, “the attacker left a cafe and threatened police officers”, he added. Security forces ended up shooting and “wounding him in the leg”, the spokesperson added.
Hamburg is one of the cities where the Euro-2024 games are played. A large police device was sent to the city before this Sunday’s game.
The attack took place near the Reeperbahn tourist avenue, just over a kilometer from the ‘fanzone’ set up by the authorities.
Security forces stated on the social network X that, after being injured, the attacker was taken to a hospital.
