With a late goal, the Netherlands beat Poland in their European Cup debut

This Sunday, the Netherlands beat Poland 2-1 in their Euro Cup debut. The match was played at the Volksparkstadion, in Hamburg, Germany. Adam Buksa scored for the Poles and Cody Gakpo and Wout Weghorst scored for the Dutch.

With the result, the Netherlands has three points and leads Group D. Poland is in last place, with zero. The other two teams in the bracket, France and Austria, face each other this Monday, at 4pm (Brasília time), at the Esprit Arena.

In the second round of the tournament’s group stage, the Netherlands plays against France, next Friday, at 4pm, at the Red Bull Arena Leipzig. While Poland duels with Austria, on the same day, at 1 pm, at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin.

The game

Poland surprised and opened the scoring 16 minutes into the first half. After a corner taken by Piotr Zieliński, Adam Buksa won the contest at the top and headed in to score.

The Netherlands began to put pressure on the opposing defense and equalized in the 29th minute. Cody Gakpo advanced through the middle and finished strongly, the ball deflected off Poland’s defense and went into the back of the goal.

At the end of the match, in the 38th minute of the final stage, the Netherlands scored the second and turned the game around. Wout Weghorst received a pass in the middle of the area and finished strongly to find the net.
