Matija Sarkic, goalkeeper for the Montenegro national team, died at the age of 26 of unknown causes, Milwall FC, the English second division club where he played, announced this Saturday.
“Everyone at the club conveys their love and support to Matija’s family and friends at this extremely sad time,” the team from the London suburb said in a statement.
“The club will make no further comment at this time and asks that the private lives of Matija’s family be respected,” he added.
According to the Montenegrin press, Sarkic felt unwell when he was in his apartment in Budva, Montenegro.
After being warned by the player’s friends, emergency services went to the scene and found him dead.
Born in England, Sarkic spent most of his teenage years in Belgium, where he came through Anderlecht’s youth squad.
Since 2018 he has played for several English teams, such as Milwall, who signed him last summer.
Sarkic played nine matches for Montenegro’s senior team, the last of which was against Belgium, on June 5, when he had an outstanding performance.
