The Portuguese cyclist João Almeida (UAE) was done this Friday with the sixth stage of the Tour of Switzerland 2024, shortened and finally disputed between Ulrichen and Blatten over just 42.5 kilometers, after winning Blatten’s final ascent. His teammate, the British Adam Yates, crossed the finish line behind him, four seconds behind, maintaining the yellow jersey and extending the lead. Third was the Danish Mattias Skjelmose (Lidl-Trek).
Van den Broek, Bisseger and Foldager They starred in the breakaway of the day, leading the race until the last 10 km climb. There, they have been losing the advantage over the peloton little by little.
With three and a half kilometers to go, Yates attacked to take the lead. They have followed him Skjelmose, Bernal and Almeida. The Colombian accelerated with 1.5 kilometers remaining and Skjelmose and Almeida followed him, reaching Bernal just 500 meters further on.
Already within the last kilometer and when it seemed that Yates would revalidate the victory he achieved on Thursday, Almeida accelerated and reached his leader. After passing the 300-meter-to-finish banner, Yates was left a little behind and Almeida took a few meters ahead until he could celebrate his victory.
This sixth stage was cut by the organization this Friday. We had to leave Locarno and reach Blatten after 151.4 kilometers and the passage – cancelled – through the Nufenenpass. In the end the stage was reduced to those 42.5 kilometers and the only final climb to Blatten.
