Defender Mats Hummels will not renew with Borussia Dortmund and will leave the team when his contract ends at the end of June this year. The announcement took place this Friday morning.
“Dear fans, my time in black and yellow is coming to an end, after more than 13 years. It has been a great honor and joy for me to have played for so long at BVB and to have been part of the journey since 13th place in January 2008 to what Borussia Dortmund is today. This club with its fans is something very special – and for me, much more than that”, said Hummels.

The information was released by Dortmund the day after coach Edin Terzic revealed that he would not continue with the team for next season. Now, the German defender is free on the market and can join any team in the world for free, with the club only needing to pay for salaries and gloves.
In 13 years playing for Borussia Dortmund, Hummels won two German Championships, two German Cups and three German Super Cups. Furthermore, he was a Champions League finalist on two occasions.
Borussia Dortmund’s sporting director, Lars Ricken, praised the 35-year-old defender.
“Mats has been one of the key players in BVB football over the last 15 years. He has won many titles, his personal highlight was certainly the 2014 World Cup triumph. Mats will forever be part of the BVB history books. We owe a lot to this player and Mats also owes a lot to this extraordinary club. We wish him all the best for his future”, he said.
