IOC President Thomas Bach announced the establishment of the Olympic eSports Games
International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach said the organization’s executive committee established the Olympic eSports Games. This became known at a press conference following a meeting of the IOC Executive Committee in Lausanne.
“This is a global step forward to keep up with the pace of the digital revolution,” Bach said. He noted that the decision should be supported by the IOC session.
In the fall of 2023, the International Olympic Committee announced the creation of an eSports commission. The official release stated that the organization sees huge potential in e-sports to attract new audiences.
Previously, Denmark opposed the participation of Russian cybersportsmen in tournaments. “As long as the conflict in Ukraine continues, I do not believe that Russian esports athletes should be allowed to participate in international competitions,” said Danish Culture Minister Jakob Engel-Schmidt.
