Albania is experiencing a political crisis due to the European Championship. Since 2016, the Albanian team has not participated in a major official tournament. Therefore, there will be no session in the country’s parliament for around 10 days. Many Albanian deputies will travel to Germany to support Albania at the Euros.
According to the Albanian press, a large part of the 140 deputies that make up the parliament will travel to see Albania at the European Championship. Thus, the country’s plenary session, which usually takes place on Thursdays, was brought forward to this Wednesday. Many of the politicians who will go to Germany will use their cars, on trips that can last more than a day.
More than 50,000 Albanians are expected for the country’s debut in the competition against Italy, this Saturday, in Dortmund. Initially, the deputies who will travel to Germany will also stay for Albania’s other two games in the group stage: against Croatia on the 19th and against Spain on the 24th. This generated great discontent among members of the opposition to the power. Gazment Bardhi, head of the opposition party, asked Prime Minister Edi Rama for clarification on this “violation of the Regulations”.
“It’s Wednesday and you’ve decided to treat the Assembly like your personal life. As the session leader, you will have to explain to the citizens why an insulting reason arose for the session to be moved from Thursday to Wednesday. You have an obligation, because you made a unilateral decision without consulting the opposition. If this (traveling to the Euro Cup) is the reason, it is a shameful act and we distance ourselves from this banal reason,” said Bardhi.
