Pavlovic will not play in the European Championship due to tonsillitis; Emre Can is called up

The German Football Federation (DFB) announced this Wednesday morning that midfielder Aleksandar Pavlovic has recurring tonsillitis and has been withdrawn from the German team that is focused on competing in the European Championship. The Bayern Munich player had already missed two friendlies in March due to the same problem. Emre Can, an athlete from Borussia Dortmund, was called up by coach Julian Nagelsmann.

“Aleksandar Pavlović has been excluded from EURO 2024. Head up and we wish you a speedy recovery, Aleks,” reads an official Bayern post on X.

Pavlovic is just 20 years old and won the starting line-up at Bayern Munich this season. In January, he made his place in Thomas Tuchel’s team and never left. The midfielder played in 22 games, scored two goals and provided two assists. The European Championship would be his first official competition with Germany’s senior team.

To replace Pavlovic, coach Julian Nagelsmann decided to call on Emre Can, from Borussia Dortmund. The 30-year-old player has 43 caps for the German national team and was in the winning squad of the now-defunct Confederations Cup in 2017.

“Emre Can immediately expressed his enthusiasm and desire to join the team. We wanted to have another player on the team who could play a lot. Especially in games where we have to know how to deal with pressure. He can fulfill the profile we need now,” said Nagelsmann, in a statement to the German team’s official website.
