“This could be my last chance”, says Southgate about England’s European Championship title

This Tuesday, coach Gareth Southgate spoke about England’s European Championship and admitted that this could be his last tournament for the national team.

“If we don’t win, I probably won’t be here anymore. So this might be my last chance. I think more or less half of national coaches leave after a tournament, that’s international football. I’ve been here for almost eight years and we’ve been close”, said the coach in an interview with the German newspaper Bild.

Southgate took charge of the England team in 2016. Since then, he has reached the semi-finals of the World Cup in 2018, the final of the European Championship in 2021 and the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup.

Despite having gone far in competitions, the coach has yet to win any title. Because of this, he imagines that a new failure will make the fans stop believing in him.

“I know you can’t always stand in front of the public and say, ‘Please do a little more.’ At some point people will lose faith in your message. If we want to be a great team and I want to be a first-class coach, then we have to deliver results in big moments,” he said.

England arrives at Euro 2024 as one of the favorite countries to lift the trophy. The national team has a squad full of great players, such as: Harry Kane (Bayern Munich), Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid) and Phil Foden (Manchester City).

The English team debuts in the competition next Sunday, at 4pm (Brasília time), against Serbia, at the Veltins-Arena, in Germany.
