Beckenbauer will be honored at the opening ceremony of the European Championship

The Eurocup begins this Friday, with the clash between Germany and Scotland, at 4pm (Brasília time). As usual, there will be an opening ceremony for the event, which will pay tribute to the legend Franz Beckenbauer, who passed away in January this year. The former defender was the captain to Germany’s first Euro title in 1972.

“We will honor the life of Franz Beckenbauer at the EURO 2024 opening ceremony on Friday. The German legend passed away in January, aged 78, after having won the European Championship and the World Cup as a player, and the latter as a coach”, says the official UEFA publication on X.

The opening game between Germany and Scotland will be held at the Allianz Arena, home of Bayern Munich, where Beckenbauer is an idol. The competition cup will be taken to the field before the start of the match. The two living German captains and European Cup winners, Bernard Dietz (1980) and Jürgen Klinsmann (1996), will carry the trophy to the edge of the pitch. In addition, Heidi, Beckenbauer’s wife, will accompany the two former players and thus the three captains of Germany’s titles at the tournament will be represented.

Beckenbauer was a football legend. The former defender was World Cup champion twice: in 1974 as a player and in 1990 as coach of the German national team. At Bayern Munich, the historic captain played 584 games, scored 75 goals and provided 75 assists. Beckenbauer passed away on January 8, 2024, aged 78.
