The Russian Chess Federation was deprived of FIDE membership, Dvorkovich received a reprimand
The Commission of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) deprived the Russian Chess Federation (RFC) of membership in the organization. Match TV reports this.
The suspension is valid for two years. The reason was that the FSR includes persons under sanctions. The disqualification was also influenced by the fact that the FSR held tournaments and events in Crimea. The last point was non-compliance with political neutrality. FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich, who is on the FSR Board of Trustees, also received a reprimand.
Dvorkovich said that the decision would be appealed by the FSR. It is noted that the FCR insists on considering this issue at the FIDE General Assembly in September 2024.
In November 2023, FIDE extended permission for Russian and Belarusian chess players to compete under the organization’s flag. It applies to those who already act in a neutral status and will last until January 1, 2025.
