Andreas Pereira says he doesn’t feel the lack of a “fixed number 5” in the Brazilian squad

In a press conference held on Wednesday afternoon, at the Brazilian Team In Orlando, midfielder Andreas Pereira addressed the lack of a permanent midfielder in the Brazilian squad. This is an increasingly common trend among coaches in modern football.

“I think football has been evolving a lot. It’s difficult to see a team now that plays with a fixed ‘5’.”, said the player when asked about the tactical trend.

When talking about the Seleção’s options for midfield positions, Andreas did not hide his trust in his teammates.

“I think we have a very dynamic midfield, used to playing in the Premier (League) which is very intense. We are very well served in all positions. There is no longer someone fixed in front of defense like Casemiro was, but We have three very dynamic and intense players to perform their duties and help the team (João Gomes, Bruno Guimarães and Douglas Luiz),” said Andreas.

The midfielder also commented on what this changes in the mind of a player like him, who can play both as an attacking midfielder and further back as a second midfielder.

“Not much changes. You will be in two to defend (when playing as second midfielder), you have to be in contact with the other midfielder, no one can go on the attack and leave the defense so vulnerable. That’s why the teacher always talks about attack by scoring. (…) You always have to be composed for any type of play.”, said the former Flamengo midfielder.

“To play in midfield positions you have to be very alert, have a lot of energy and certainly everyone will have it to represent Brazil in the Copa América.”, concluded Andreas.
