After Francesco Acerbi, Italy, the current European champion, loses another defender for Euro 2024 (which will be held in Germany from June 14 to July 14) with the injury this Sunday to Giorgio Scalvini.
The Atalanta player was injured in the 3-2 defeat to Fiorentina in a postponed game from the 29th round. Scalvini retired to the dressing room with a limp and medical tests confirmed the severity of the injury.
“He suffered a ruptured cruciate ligament in his left knee,” Atalanta announced in a statement.
The 20-year-old defender, an absolute starter this season for the team that became champions of the Europa League, wore the Italy shirt eight times.
Italian national team coach Luciano Spalletti had already lost another defender, Francesco Acerbi, from Inter Milan, who played 34 times for the ‘Nazionale’, due to pubalgia.
Spalletti, who has named 30 players in a final list of 26, could now leave Juventus defender Federico Gatti on “pre-alert” following Acerbi’s injury.
The definitive list of 26 players will be published on June 6th.
Italy starts the European Championship in the ‘Group of Death’ against Albania, Spain and Croatia.
