Striker Edinson Cavani, 37, announced this Thursday on his social networks that he will no longer play for the Uruguay national team. The player was in Marcelo Bielsa’s squad for the America Cupwhich starts on June 20th.
“Thank you to each and every person who has been part of this path for so many years. I was and will always be blessed to have worn this shirt to represent what I love most in the world, my country,” said Cavani.
The Boca Juniors striker did not give many details about the reason for his sudden departure, but stated that he wants to dedicate himself to the new stage of his career and give his all where he has to be.
“Today I decide to take a step aside, but I will always follow you with my heart beating, like when I entered the field with that beautiful shirt.”, concluded Cavani.
Edinson Cavani is the third most played player in Uruguay’s history, with 136 games, only surpassed by Luis Suárez’s 138 and Diego Godín’s 161. He participated in four World Cups defending Celeste and was champion of the 2011 Copa América.
