Mendilibar’s Olympiacos compete in the Conference League final against Fiorentina
Olympiacos and Fiorentina They play this Wednesday at the AEK Arena in Athens (9:00 p.m.) the UEFA Conference League finala title match in which the Greek team led by José Luis Mendilibar seeks its second European title in two years. The Italians, on the other hand, dream of lifting the second European title in their history.
It will be the first European final in its history for the Olympiacosbut not for José Luis Mendilibar. The Basque coach, who has already raised the Europa League last season with Seville, wants to achieve the second title of his career. Just over three months after being named coach of Olympiacosis just one match away from giving Greek football its first continental club title.
When Mendilibar landed in Greece, Olympiacos was fourth classified in the Greek League and had just been knocked out of the Greek Cup. Since then, the Piraeus team has played 22 games under the Zaldibar coach, achieving 15 wins, two draws and five losses.
Olympiacos made it to the final after eliminating a priori superior teams such as Aston Villawhom they beat 6-2 on aggregate, or Fenerbahceand thanks to feats such as the comeback at home against the Maccabi Tel Avivto which they overcame the 1-4 in the first leg with a historic 1-6.
In front will be a team that seems to have the measure of the competition, Fiorentina. The Italians repeat in the match for the title of the Conference League, although this season they hope to be able to lift the trophy that escaped them a year ago in the last minute of the final due to a goal from Bowen. Despite this, the Viola team faces its second consecutive final with the hope of winning the second European title in its history after the 1961 Cup Winners’ Cup.
