Napoli striker Victor Osimhen was injured and is out of Nigeria’s two African qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup scheduled for June, the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) announced on Tuesday.
The NFF, which did not specify the nature of the injury, said Osimhen will be out for four weeks. Thus, he will not face South Africa, on June 7th, and Benin, on the 10th.
The two games are crucial for Nigeria, who are in third place in Group C with two points, after drawing their first two games. The Rwandan team leads the group with four points, ahead of South Africa (2nd, three points), while Benin (one point) is at the bottom.
Last Sunday, in the 0-0 draw between Napoli and Lecce, in the 38th and final round of the Italian Championship, Osimhen spent 25 minutes on the field after starting on the bench and entering the second half.
The Nigerian was Serie A’s top scorer last season with 26 goals and helped the Neapolitan team win the title after 33 years.
