Tarasova explained the change of citizenship by Russian skaters due to fear of competition
Honored Coach of the USSR Tatyana Tarasova explained why some Russian figure skaters change their citizenship. Her words are quoted by TASS.
According to the specialist, athletes are afraid of competition. “They feel that they are nobody here and there is no way to call them, they won’t be able to get into the top three or the top five here – they won’t make it. They are fighting for themselves, to be the first in another country and to go to the European Championship,” the coach said.
On May 28, it became known that Sofya Titova, a 15-year-old student of two-time Olympic champion Evgeni Plushenko, would change her sports citizenship to Armenian. On May 24, the Russian Figure Skating Federation (FFKKR) gave Sofya Samodelkina permission to compete for Kazakhstan.
Russian figure skaters were banned from competing in tournaments under the auspices of the International Skating Union (ISU) in March 2022. The last major start for domestic athletes was the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing.
