Richard Dreyfuss became famous thanks to Steven Spielberg’s cult “Jaws”. The actor played Matt Hooper in the film, and in the following years of his career he also starred in “Symphony of Life” and “What About Bob?” and “Goodbye Girl”. The famous creator was invited to The Cabot cinema in Massachusetts for a meeting before the screening of “Jaws”.
Richard Dreyfus outraged fans with his speech. They started leaving the cinema
Those present in the cinema expected that the actor would share anecdotes from the set with them during the Q&A session. They were probably most curious about the behind-the-scenes work with Spielberg. Dreyfuss had the opportunity to work with the director on both “Jaws” and “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.” Unfortunately, the meeting with the actor ended in an unpleasant atmosphere.
As reported by The Guardian, Dreyfuss entered the stage wearing a dress with Taylor Swift’s “Love Story” playing in the background. The actor moved his hips suggestively and waved his cane. Dreyfuss then served the audience with a barrage of sexist and transphobic jokes.
Those present in the cinema described the events on the Internet. They were clearly outraged by Dreyfuss’s attitude. The actor allegedly pointed out Barbra Streisand’s gender, insulted parents of transgender teenagers, and pointedly commented on the Academy’s new rules regarding inclusivity when awarding awards. Deadline reports that outrageous phrases were uttered from the stage, such as: “You shouldn’t listen to a 10-year-old who says he wants to be a boy, not a girl.”
Kino apologizes for the appearance of the actor known from “Jaws”
Much of the audience at The Cabot left before the film was shown. “We left this interview together with a hundred other people,” we read in the comments on Facebook. “It was disgusting. How could the people from The Cabot invite this man to a discussion? I found out he is known for talking such nonsense,” wrote another person.
The facility issued an official statement in which it apologized for the situation. Representatives of The Cabot admitted that they also had reservations about Richard Dreyfuss’s speech. “The views expressed by Mr. Dreyfuss do not reflect the values we share as an organization. We deeply regret that the speech caused so much suffering to many visitors to The Cabot. The event was intended to be a conversation commemorating the iconic film, but instead it became a platform for exposing political views. We take full responsibility for the oversight of not anticipating the direction of the conversation and for the discomfort this incident caused to many customers,” reads the official position of the cinema.
