The mayor of Tampere Kummola called the second place of the Russian team in the IIHF ranking ridiculous
The mayor of the Finnish city of Tampere, Kalervo Kummola, spoke about the ranking of national teams according to the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). His words are quoted by Ilta Sanomat.
Kummola called the second place of the Russian team in the ranking ridiculous. He drew attention to the fact that over the past six years the domestic team has won only one bronze medal at the world championships. “It would be better if the entire rating was closed altogether,” the politician thought.
Earlier it became known that the Russian team moved up one place in the IIHF rankings. The team is in second place with 4065 points. The suspended Russians moved up the list after their defeat to Finland in the quarter-finals of the 2024 World Cup. Canada leads the ranking with 4100 points. The third place is taken by the Finnish team with 3955 points.
In February, the IIHF extended the suspension of the Russian and Belarus national teams for the 2024/2025 season. The officially stated reason was current security risks.
