Southampton beats Leeds and guarantees access to the elite of English football

Southampton are back among the elite of English football. With the victory over Leeds United, this Sunday, 1-0, at Wembley Stadium, in the final of the Championship playoffs, the team guaranteed access to the Premier League.

The winning goal was scored by Adam Armstrong in the 23rd minute of the first half. He received a good pass from David Brooks, came across the goal and finished past the goalkeeper.

In the playoff semi-final, Southampton beat West Bromwich 3-1 on aggregate. Leeds United, in turn, had beaten Norwich 4-0, adding up the score from the round-trip games.

Leicester City and Ipswich Town, which were in the top two places in the Championship table, had already secured access to the First Division and did not need to play in the playoffs.

Luton Town, Burnley and Sheffield United were the three clubs relegated from the Premier League and will play in the Championship next season. Southampton’s last participation in the elite of English football took place last season, when they finished the competition at the bottom.
