On a day of tributes, Kroos bursts into tears when he sees his children saying goodbye to the Bernabéu: “It killed me”

German Toni Kroos said goodbye to the Santiago Bernabéu this Saturday, as Real Madrid drew 0-0 with Real Betis in the Spanish Championship. The match was marked by several tributes to the 34-year-old player, who was holding back tears until he saw his children and started crying.

“I was very strong, until I saw my children (on the edge of the field) and that killed me”, confessed Toni Kroos, after the game.

The Santiago Bernabéu has been Kroos’ home for the last ten years, since moving from Bayern Munich to Real Madrid in 2014. Since then, the German has marked an era in this period on Spanish soil. So far there have been 464 matches, 28 goals and an incredible 22 titles won.

Due to his success wearing the Real shirt, Saturday was full of tributes for Toni Kroos. Before the match, the midfielder was the last player to enter the field and walked along a corridor made by the Spanish club’s athletes, who applauded him. After the game, Kroos spoke into a microphone for the entire stadium and thanked him for the ten years he was at Real Madrid.

“I can only thank all the Madrid fans, the club, my teammates, the stadium… In these ten years I have always felt at home. They were unforgettable. You arrive at this game with a different feeling, because you know it’s the last one, of course. I said I wanted to make the most of it and I did it for 85 minutes, as I always did,” said Kroos.

Toni Kroos will play his last game for Real Madrid in the Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund, on June 1, at Wembley. Afterwards, he will compete in the European Championship for the German team and, after the continental tournament, he will retire from football for good.
