Zhurova criticized Duhamel’s call to ban the change of citizenship for figure skaters
First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, Olympic champion in speed skating Svetlana Zhurova appreciated the call of Canadian figure skater Megan Duhamel, who won the Olympic Games, for a ban on changing sports citizenship for Russian figure skaters. Her words are quoted by Match TV.
She criticized the proposal and noted that the International Figure Skating Federation (ISU) would not take it seriously. “What then should we do with other transitions? Athletes from other countries also move to other teams. What, ban some and not others?” – noted Zhurova.
Earlier, Duhamel called on the ISU to prohibit Russian skaters from moving to other teams if they do not train abroad. “Otherwise, they are still supporting the government program in Russia,” she said.
Russian figure skaters were banned from competing in tournaments under the auspices of the ISU in March 2022. The last major start for domestic athletes was the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing.
